Mission American Kitchen & Bar

I won a gift card to Mission at a networking event several months ago, but kept putting off using it.  When I go out, I tend towards ethnic restaurants so I can eat food that I can't make at home.  American cuisine just sounded a little...boring.

But a free dinner at a nice restaurant is not to be scoffed at, so Mike and I headed over to the IDS Center one Friday after work.  We settled into a cozy circular booth in the corner and I was pleasantly surprised with how fabulous "contemporary American cuisine" could be.

I ordered the Cracker Crusted Walleye, with wild rice, pecan brown butter, and baby vegetables.

Cracker-Crusted Walleye

The wild rice had a nice crunchy texture, the vegetables were adequate, but the walleye was one of the best pieces of fish I've ever eaten.  The fish itself was cooked to tender perfection, and the cracker crust added a nice bit of crispness.  The pecan brown butter wasn't just on top of the dish--the delicious nutty flavor was soaked into the fish.  I lingered over the walleye, savoring every bite, because I just didn't want it to be gone.

Mike (the more carnivorous member of this partnership) ordered the Grilled New York Strip, crusted with bleu cheese and served with red pepper mashed potatoes.

He ordered his steak medium, and although in appearance it seemed more like medium-rare, he was very satisfied with the flavor and texture.  Mike also noted that the steak was particularly well paired with the sauce, and the red pepper mashed potatoes were unique and delicious.

Overall, Mission provides an lovely atmosphere, attentive service, and top-notch food--perfect for a special date night.  We will definitely be going back on our own dime.
