Potter's Pasties

For the past few summers, I've been a mere spectator to the proliferation of food trucks in downtown Minneapolis, since I hardly ever buy lunch (there are usually leftovers from dinner the night before).  However, last summer the Potter's Pasties food truck caught my eye.  For the uninitiated,  pasties are baked pastries filled with meat and vegetables, originally from Cornwall and brought to northern Minnesota's Iron Range by Cornish miners (hence my familiarity with them).  Although there are several local British pubs with pasties on the menu, it can be tricky to find meatless versions.  Potter's menu features the Thai veg pasty, as well as traditional, pork, and chicken options and a daily special, which is sometimes meatless.

True to its name, the Thai veg pasty is loaded with vegetables: potatoes, carrots, celery, and a bit of spinach.  The vegetables are lightly dressed with a red Thai coconut cream sauce that imparts a mild spiciness without adding to the richness of the pasty, allowing the crust to shine.  Delicious as the filling is, a pasty is really all about the crust, and Potter's doesn't disappoint.  Tender and flaky, with a generous crimped edge, the best part of my pasty was the final bite of crust (note that since the crust is made with lard, the Thai veg pasty is not vegetarian).

Mike ordered the traditional pasty, filled with beef, carrots, potatoes, onions, and gravy, and topped it with a generous drizzle of Sriracha sauce.  Unfortunately, he didn't realize until we sat down to eat that despite its label the pasty was actually "The Pig" pasty, stuffed with pulled pork, onions, apples, and coriander.  At this point, we didn't want to spend the rest of our lunch hour trekking back to the food truck and waiting in line  for a replacement pasty.  Delicious as Sriracha sauce is with a traditional beef pasty, it really doesn't work with apples.  Mike scraped off the Sriracha sauce as best he could, but it was still hard to get an accurate read on the flavor.  The pork was pleasantly juicy, but the combination of very sweet apples, cinnamon, and crust gave the pasty a strange dessert-like feel.

Despite Mike's disappointing experience, I enjoyed my Thai veg pasty so much that I think Potter's Pasties will become my new occasional lunchtime splurge.
