Note: Sunsets Wayzata closed in March 2014

After lunch at the Namaste Cafe, a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and my free birthday beverage at Caribou Coffee, the birthday fun continued with a patio dinner at Sunsets in Wayzata.  The allure of Sunsets is not the food (although they do have a decent menu with a few vegetarian options), but rather the patio on Lake Minnetonka.  I love eating by the water, so it seemed like a perfect way to end my birthday.

Be forewarned that you cannot make reservations for the patio.  We arrived at about 7:15 on a Saturday, hoping to have missed some of the dinner rush, and waited half an hour for a table.  Unfortunately, when we finally got to our table and ordered, it was another half hour wait before our  artichoke cheese dip appetizer arrived.  Due to long wait, our waitress comped our appetizer, which was a nice gesture.  The appetizer Mike's pick, but I appreciated the perfectly grilled and well-seasoned baguette slices.

For dinner, I got the garlic vegetable flatbread, which featured sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, green onions, and copious amounts of asiago cheese.  It was incredibly salty, possibly from all of the cheese, and the water refills were on the slow side.  It was good enough to be acceptable, but seasoning solely with excessive cheese displays a lack of creativity.  In contrast, Mike's fish and chips were nicely breaded, light and crispy instead of greasy.  Although the portion was smaller than at your typical pub or food truck, he found it to be sufficient.

Since you have to order dessert on your birthday (at least I do), I got the cheesecake with strawberries, which was good but nothing special.  However, our waitress overheard that it was my birthday and put some candles in my slice, as well as taking it off our bill, which was an unexpected and thoughtful touch.

Overall, the food was good, not great, and the service was good, albeit on the slow side.  Sunsets is worth a visit if you're as enamored as I am by eating outside on Lake Minnetonka, but otherwise you can skip it.
