Since I’m not much of a drinker, I judge the quality of a happy hour solely by its food offerings.  By this measure, my favorite place to go in downtown Minneapolis is The Newsroom.

I always get the same thing: the immense and oh-so-delicious Margherita Flatbread.  For only $5, this is more of a dinner than an appetizer.  The basil pesto is fresh and flavorful, and the shavings of Parmesan sprinkled on top are a delectable touch.

Mike ordered the Southern Bell Flatbread, which was a disappointment.  The grilled chicken was dry and seemed to be completely unseasoned, while the rest of the ingredients (a “sweet chipotle cream” better suited for a dessert, onion, pepperoncini, jalapeno, and mozzarella) didn’t combine in a cohesive way.

However, Mike also got some wings, which more than made up for his flatbread.  The portion was generously sized, with a heap of crisp celery and thick bleu cheese dressing.  Mike is picky about his wings, so for him to declare, “These are really good wings” is high praise indeed.

Besides the mostly-delicious and well-priced appetizers, The Newsroom’s décor makes it worth a visit.  The various rooms have different themes based on the sections of a newspaper (so far I’ve eaten in Travel, Sports, and Business) and I always spend the first few minutes reading all of the headlines on the newspaper-style wallpaper.
