As an avid snacker, I'm always on the lookout for something new to mix up my munching routine.  Sensible Portions recently sent me a couple of bags of Poppin' Peas, a brand new item from their line of better-for-you snacks.  Made from dehydrated roasted green peas and rice flour, these gluten-free, oven-baked snacks have 50% less fat than the leading potato chip, as well as being a good source of fiber (4 grams per serving). 

Currently, there are two flavors of Poppin' Peas: Sea Salt (vegan) and Sour Cream & Onion.  The Sea Salt flavor is lightly salted, with a slight pea flavor--tasty, but not terribly exciting.  The Sour Cream & Onion have the tang and bold flavor familiar from potato chips.  Since the Sour Cream & Onion flavor is more pronounced, I couldn't detect the pea taste.  The texture of both varieties is appealingly light and puffy, similar to a puffed corn snack. 

The suggested retail price is $3.19 for a 4-ounce bag (about $0.80 per 1-ounce serving), which seems reasonable--that's about the price of a vending machine bag of potato chips.  The 1-ounce, 120 calorie serving size measures out to about 1.5 cups of Poppin' Peas, enough to fill a small bowl.

The takeaway: I loved the puffy texture and found the portion size satisfying.  The Sea Salt flavor was tasty, and the Sour Cream & Onion Poppin' Peas were just as flavorful as potato chips--but much healthier.
